Stones in Water

Individual Sessions

"We need look no further than ourselves to see a miracle everyday"

Individual sessions are scheduled at your convenience. Sessions are held in The Stones in Water Studio in Minneapolis or in River Falls or as on-sight/house call.

How and where:
Individual study is usually done in the Stones in Water (SIW) Studio. In certain situations a workplace visit or house call is best.

Stones in Water Twin Cities studio is in the Ivy Building for the Arts, 2637 27th Ave South Minneapolis within the Leon Thurman Voice Center suite 200C.

The River Falls studio is N8806 600th St.

While a one-time lesson is possible, an initial series of 6 or more lessons is recommended to get maximum benefit from the work. Generally, it is helpful to be able to commit to work together for a consistent period of time. There have been times when a person made the change they wanted in one or two sessions. It is much more common to need more 6 to 12 lessons to change long held habits. The length of study is determined by your particular needs.  Ultimately the goal is for you to be free of your concern with no need of additional help.

Length and Cost of a Session
Individual Lessons are an hour to an hour and a half. I charge $75 an hour and $100.00 for an hour and a half. I offer a 10% discount for a series of 6 lessons.

There is a 15% discount if you sign-up for a series of lessons before October 1st, 2012.

6 - 1 hour sessions = $450 minus 10% total $405.00
3 - 1 hour and plus 3 - 1 1/2 hour sessions = $525 minus 10% = $474
6 - 1 1/2 hour sessions = $600 minus 10% =$540.00

I am open to making alternative financial arrangements so you can have lessons if you want them. Shorter lessons, reduced rates and trades have all been possible in the past.

There is  $30 fee for making a house call or for a last minute cancellation. You will be charged the full fee for a missed lesson.

LearningMethods™ sessions can be done on the phone. Sessions are generally an hour and half to 2 hours long. The cost is $100.00 per session.

Payments

Most people pay at the time of the lesson. You can also pay on-lin here with paypal.

Individual Sessions are one -on- one sessions - tailored to your needs. The goal of the work is to get to the root of your symptom. In the process you learn to understand the way your system is designed to function for optimal performance/action.  As you begin to work with your body and not against it you experience effortless grace, energy, full and open stature and freedom from pain. If you are a performer or athlete we will look at your approach and efficiency. If you are in pain we will look to find the source. In all cases we are investigating why it makes sense you have the symptom or results you are having.

In this work we look at how the way you go about your activities might lead to the symptom you are having. As an example that can be equally true for many kinds of chronic pain, injury or tension: Someone with knee pain might have been told to do strengthening exercises or stretches. But when I watch the person move I often see that his/her way of standing, walking, bending, is constantly focusing forces on the knee. It makes perfect sense that anyone who is functioning with forces focused on the knees will have pain and eventually real tissue damage/injury.

I call this the invisible issue. The way a person goes about things has a primary effect on how s/he is functioning, how s/he feels. When a person changes the way the forces are focused by changing the way of going about things then the pain changes. The damage may not be reversible but often a person can live pain free.

As we look closer to make sense of why the person has been off balance with forces focused on the knees we may discover s/he has a rushed approach to most activities. No matter what s/he knows about physical balance, or how many stretches and strengthening exercises s/he does, the system will function off balance whenever s/he rushes. If that is most of the time then again it makes sense the knees are in pain. Change the approach to life along with a greater understanding of how forces are focused or how forces can be openly distributed then we have the root of the problem.

This person can now independently sense when they are fighting themselves(rushed or off balance) and respond toward greater ease, balance and useful action. As s/he begins to go about all activities in a healthy way her/his muscles will adapt to this change - lengthening, shortening, strengthening, easing as needed, naturally and as a whole.

As one runner with knee problems wrote to me: "I had relegated myself to the fact that my body had seen too many miles and my running days were over."  He tells of our work together and says, "Maybe my older, heavily used body is still perfect for running. In the past two weeks I have had some of the best road runs in years. The great part is I no longer pay for them with days of painful swollen knees. PS. Thinking about a half marathon." The full story is in the what others say in the About section on this site.

Specific Applications for Lessons:
Individual study is way for you to receive the most direct and specific guidance. The approach used in an individual session varies depending on your particular interest. See common applications below. Please see the section on LearningMethods™ for other applications of individual work.

  • Aging - Many people attribute a sense of stiffness and aches to aging, almost as if there is nothing to be done about it. While clearly our tissues loose elasticity as we age much of what people feel is more about the way in which they have been moving or not moving. It is quite possible to be quite free and mobile and flexible as we age. This work can help you discover and regain your maximum mobility and fluidity and prevent unnecessary stiffening as you grow older. Dance yourself into aging!
  • Pain and Injury - Discover and change the underlying cause of pain and injury. In this work we look at how your way of going about things contributes to your pain. As you learn to function with less strain and focusing of forces you regain ease and relief from pain. While this work will not reverse damage it will stop continued damage and often alleviate the pain symptom. This might include addressing everyday movement like walking, sitting, bending or the specific activities you do, like playing an instrument, running, working at computer, making art, gardening, lifting weights and so forth.
  • Traumatic Injury - I can help a person suffering from a traumatic injury create the conditions to allow maximum recovery. This work also helps prevent the original injury from becoming chronic pain, which is a major side effect of such injuries. When people try to "protect" the injured area they commonly set up conditions conducive to developing chronic pain.
  • Chronic Pain - In many cases chronic pain is caused or exacerbated by the way we move. Without knowing it we are using more effort and strain in our daily movement. Osteoarthritis, prolapsed discs, tendinitis, knee and hip problems, muscle spasms and many other diagnoses are our systems way of signaling to us that we are functioning inefficiently. This work can reverse this damaging cycle and give great relief to symptoms we think are inevitable.

  • Over use or repetitive strain injuries - The language for this kind of injury is slightly misleading. I would rename it "misuse" injury. A musician, office worker or gardener who is told they have "overused" a body part is almost always functioning in a way that has focused forces on that area causing the inflammation and/or damage. Addressing the first signs of ache and pain is key to preventing further damage. Individual sessions can help you move repetitively with ease, efficiency and awareness so you can do what you love to do.
  • Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - These conditions are gradually being understood but still filled with mystery. Individual sessions can help you cope with your pain or fatigue. LearningMethods can be particularly useful if you fall into the intense, type A personality contributing factor category. The movement efficiency work can help you function with greater ease and lightness giving you access to more energy.
  • Singers/Actors - I have worked extensively with singers and actors. Individual sessions can help you overcome interferences in your performance such as pain, anxiety or too much effort and tension in your work. Lessons can help you find greater range and ease as well as enhance your understanding of how you work. Since you are your instrument this can have long-range benefits to your on-going artistry. The work can be particularly useful for teachers, giving you another range of tools to help your students.
All of the above specifics can be useful for athletes, instrumentalists and anyone else who wants to function fully and easily.
